Queensland Trip Day 17 - Sunday 06 August 2017 - Cooktown - Atherton

COOKTOWN TO LAURA

An early start on what we knew would be a long day. Sealed at first but degenearated to mildly demanding unsealed surfaces.

Old Laura Station has been preserved, without embelishment and was a delight to explore.

Laura township is small but active.
Amongst other things it supports an excellent cultural centre that addresses a whole range of areas of interest - Quinkan culture' early mining' cattle industry and more.

Resting in the main road' not stirring for traffic - although it was not heavy.

LAURA TO ATHERTON

Along the back of the range but still mountainous. Wonderful view after wonderful view.

Where the name of the town and area come from.

A quick drive through of Herberton, where there is a well presented heritage mining village to our camp (the only ones we think) on Baldy Mountain in the Herberton Forest National Park.
It was cold and shrouded in mist once the evening came on, so we retired early hoping for something better in the morning.
