Queensland Trip Day 15 - Friday 04 August 2017 - Mossman to Cooktown

MOSSMAN TO THE DAINTREE RIVER CROSSING

On the way to the car at Mossman Motel and Holiday Villas.

Many stages of sugar cane growing in two snapshots.

The Daintree River Ferry.

BETWEEN THE DAINTREE AND BLOOMFIELD RIVERS

About 75 kms of demanding driving through tropical rain forest - sealed road at first (to Cape Tribulation) but then unsealed with numerous sharp turns, steep inclines and creek crossings, mostly using 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears. The road between Cape Tribulation and the Bloomfield River is known as the Bloomfield Track and was the subject of the Bloomfield Blockade in 1983-84 when environmentalists resisted its construction in favour of a walking track. The Blockade did not stop the road being constructed but contributed to the World Heritage listing of the Daintree Forest area.
For us, the drive was a delight of tropical rainforest and isolated tropical beaches.

A particularly steep section of the track surfaced in ridged concrete for traction.

BLOOMFIELD RIVER TO COOKTOWN

We visited the Bloomfield Falls and passed by Wujal Wujal, a former Lutheran Mission, now an enterprising indigenous community.
The first crocodile for this trip.

Approaching Cooktown after rejoining the main highway - out of the rainforest, past a massive mountain of black rocks and banks of colourful grasses.

Our accommodation at Milkwood Lodge, just out of town in a tropical bushland setting.
The proprietor is quite a character who has spent his life in North Queensland.
