West & North June - July 2016 : Day 05 - Saturday 02 July - Kalgoorlie to Meekatharra

Pikers! Another bush camp missed due to a little moisture and running out of daylight. However, tomorrow night will definitely be a bush camp in the Karijini National Park - booked and committed to. If necessary we'll use the tent.

Today was a long but very enjoyable trek north to Wiluna then west on a mostly unsealed road to Meekatharra, making some delightful finds along the way.

Menzies is a small town that has created interest through  involvement in the Inside Australia Art Project.

Gwalia is an old gold-mining community a couple of kilometers out of Leonora. Founded in 1896 it had a population of over 1,000 (many Italians) but died "overnight" in December 1963 due to an accident. A modern mine now operates at the site, but the village has been kept, virtually without change, as an annexe to a mining museum..

Overlooking the Gwalia site is "Hoover House", designed by the mine manager Herbert Hoover who later became the 31st President of the USA. The house is now part of the mining museum and provides bed-and-breakfast accommodation.

Along the Road - Vegetation changed from low woodland to sparse arid. - Topography was mostly flat to gently undulating. We became used to most  hills  turning out to be mine overburden dumps. They are everywhere. It was only on the westward run from Wiluna to Meekatharra that mining gave way to cattle.
