Queensland Trip Day 9 - Saturday 29 July 2017 - Dalyrimple NP to Wallaman Falls

AN EARLY START

We were hoping for some great sunrise photography but were frustrated by a clear sky and ground mist. We were anticipating a fairly demanding and a little uncertain day of travel.

ALONG AND OVER THE RANGE

Our start on the Gregory Development Road (north) and the Hervey Range Road (east towards Townsville) was sealed and quite uneventful. After 40 kms along the Hervey Range Road we turned off on a minor road to Hidden Valley, Mount Fox and eventually Wallaman Falls - our destination.

Initially this was a sealed road for beef industry transport, but later became a tortuous unsealed road following and eventually crossing the range

Onward via Hidden Valley.

After Mt Fox we descended on a narrow sealed road to the coastal plains and sugar cane farms before climbing again to Wallaman Falls.

Our campsite at Wallaman Falls - shared with 30 or so others - but grass underfoot and just enough space to not feel too crowded.

Queensland Trip Day 8 - Friday 28 July 2017 - White Mountain NP to Charters Towers and Dalyrimple NP...

EXIT FROM WHITE MOUNTAIN

AND ON TO CHARTERS TOWERS

A tiny, but incredibly well stocked, arts and crafts center in Pentland, a tiny town along the way.

Charters Towers has some striking architecture (both older and modern) along with its mining (gold then other) and World War 2 legacy.

Queensland Trip Day 7 - Thursday 27 July 2017 - Winton to Charleville and on to White Mountin NP

WINTON

Our accommodation at Winton had a notice in the bathroom promoting (rather than apologising for) the quality of the water drawn from the artesian basin. Clever.

Not a lot appeared to have changed since our last visit to Winton several years ago although a large new entertainment centre is being constructed.

The beautiful little timber Anglcan church is similar to a number of other churches around rural Queensland. One wonders what the history of them is - the same architect? (as has happened in rural South Australia and rural UK).

CHARLEVILLE

Parts of the road to Charlevlle are reminiscent of the Hay Plains - flat and featureless.

Charleville has capitalised on its relationship to dinosaur finds, artesian water and windmills.

There is some quirkiness too.

and explorers -
A blaze on a coolibah tree left by Frederick Walker while on a rescue mission for Burke and Wills - 1861. .William Landsborough tried to find them too in 1862.
