Darwin for New Year 2013-14

Stayed at the Palms Resort, right on the city esplanade - so convenient, in the sea breeze zone and only about 20 minutes drive from the family at Moil.

About 5.30 pm of New Years Eve a magnificent Darwin thunder storm and downpour (the only one while we were there) to clear the humidity for later celebrations down at the waterfront.

A truly beautiful evening to follow the storm - humidity down, cool, calm and thousands of family groups of all nationalities - walking around, socialising, picnicing - just enjoying the alcohol free event. We spent the time with our Darwin family but also met up with other friends too.
We were impressed with Council employees quietly enforcing the "no alcohol" policy and picking up litter during the function rather than waiting until afterwards. It seemed to encouraged people to use the plentiful bins and avoid the usual build-up of litter.

A boy in the group next to us having fun with glo-sticks.

The first fireworks display that we have actually attended rather than watching from afar.
What a way to blow some tens of thousands of dollars in 15 minutes.
