OUTBACK NSW DAY 4 SUNDAY 19 MAY 2019

SILVERTON AND ANOTHER VISIT TO BROKEN HILL

A walk across the creek and around central Silverton revealed much of the history of the old town. Briefly in the 1880's it was the main town in the area with a population of several thousand but was bypassed with the rise of Broken Hill. Today it has a permanent population of only around forty but remains a place of interest for tourists and Broken Hill residents.

The old Silverton Tramway.

The cemetery with its memorial of pick-heads.

Some fame and continuing film-making interest has come from Mad Max.

An afernoon revisit to Broken Hill let us see the  "Big Picture" at the "Silver City Art Centre and Mint" - a wrap around canvas 12 meters high and 100 meters long depicting much of the SA-NSW bush - quite mind-blowing and worth the entry fee. We also drove up to the Line of Lode to see the mine and town from an elevated position.

Memorial to mine fatalities over the years.

OUTBACK NSW DAY 3 SATURDAY 18 MAY 2019

A VISIT TO BROKEN HILL WITH A FOCUS ON ART

The "Living Desert" collection of sculptures was an impressive example of a creative community project, well worth the short drive out of town (about 10 kms).

The "Pro Hart" gallery was typically "Pro Hart" and very enoyable, although only outside photography was possible.

The "Regional Art Gallery"had a wonderful and diverse collection from many different artists working across a wide variety of media.

There is also some striking street sculpture and art.

Back at Silverton - a pleasant evening under a full moon.

OUTBACK NSW ; 16-29 MAY 2019

As well as responding to a part of Australia that we have not visited, this trip was a trial of using our trailer for bush travel. Our swag was mounted on the trailer with the space beneath providing storage for other camp furniture - stove, table, seats etc. Our final judgement of the trailer was that we actually prefer sleeping with the swag on the ground and that dust leakage into the trailer was a major problem for us.

The itinerary was planned to be flexible with no pre-bookings. This proved fortunate when flooding from the Paroo River caused some road closures and one fuel stop was out of diesel. We also found one track on the map that was not there, necessitating an unplanned second visit to Broken Hill.

The final result was very satisfying and a great trip.
